Legal proceedings impacting Word 2007

As you may be aware, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal District this week upheld a previous ruling that Microsoft's use of an XML handling technology in Word 2007 infringes upon a patent held by Canadian company, i4i. This will potentially impact the versions of Office 2007 that we distribute through our Software Distribution site. At this time we believe that all existing installed copies of MS Office 2007 will be unaffected by this decision. We will continue to follow the proceedings and ensure that the University of Guelph complies with the final outcome.

Gryph Mail Upgrade Notification

Plans are underway to upgrade the GryphMail Servers over the winter break. This change is primarily a maintenance update to address various known issues with the software and is a prerequisite for a larger upgrade planned for summer 2010.

Messages sent to the university during the service outage will be queued and delivered upon completion of the upgrade.

On the day of the upgrade,  please refer to these pages, the Service Updates feed on the CCS home page to determine the current status of the upgrade process and subsequent availability of email access.

Wireless Upgrade

If your computer was built prior to 2003 or if you are using the 802.11b protocol to connect remotely to the wireless network, you may encounter difficulty connecting to the wireless network as of January 19, 2010. This is due to an upgrade that will to improve accessibility and speed across campus, but may result in restricted accessibility to a small percentage of computers built prior to 2003.

If you are having difficulty connecting remotely, you may be using the 802.11b protocol, which is no longer supported on the campus wireless network. This may be corrected by a simple change of settings on your computer. In order to ensure that your wireless card is able to support the 802.11g protocol, and it has the latest driver installed and correctly configured, we recommend that you please contact your local departmental IT support or the CCS Help Centre at 519-824-4120 ext. 58888 or 58888help@uoguelph.ca. You can also get assistance at the CCS IT Help Desk located on the first floor of the Library.

We apologize for any inconvenience.
